Meet: Peter BANGURA

Director of Mines

Peter is a professional Civil and Mining Engineer and holds a First-Class Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, a Master of Science Degree in Mining Engineering (with Distinction) from Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter and a Master of Public Policy degree from the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford. He also holds a Master of the Camborne School of Mines (MCSM) qualification from University of Exeter in recognition of his outstanding academic performance.

In his current role as Director of Mines at the National Minerals Agency (NMA), Sierra Leone, Peter is responsible for promoting and facilitating the management and development of mineral resources and regulatory administration. This includes the supervision of all reconnaissance, exploration, and mining operations. He directly supervises three units within the Mines Directorate: Economic and Financial Modelling, Mining Cadastre and Mining Compliance.

Peter’s responsibility is to ensure the effective implementation of mineral sector policies formulated by the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources while also providing technical and strategic advice to the Director General and Minister on emerging policy issues. As Director of Mines, he has represented the NMA in the negotiations for large-scale mining projects between investors and the Government of Sierra Leone. He also represents the NMA on the Environment Protection Agency and the Minerals Advisory Boards.

Peter is a member of the Sierra Leone Multi-Stakeholder Group and played a very active role in the SLEITI 2011 reconciliation report that led to Sierra Leone achieving compliance EITI status.

Prior to joining the NMA in 2013, he worked as a Mine Planning Engineer at Tonkolili Iron Ore (African Minerals Limited), Sierra Leone’s largest mining operation. At Tonkolili Iron Ore , he was responsible for the management of daily and fortnightly, production planning and scheduling of in pit mining activities designed to meet production targets for both tonnage and grade.

As part of his Civil Engineering professional career he worked at the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) engaging in many highway engineering projects including the Bo-Maisaka highway construction and Regent-Grafton Road project where he served as Assistant Project Manager.

Peter is a Corporate member of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM- MAusIMM number 317962), Cornish Institute Engineers UK (CIE), Sierra Leone Institute of Engineers (SLIE), Emerging Leaders in Africa Mining (ELAM) group and an Alumnus of the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC) program.
