Meet: Alusine O. Timbo

Deputy Director of Mines

Alusine is the Deputy Director of Mines with the key responsibility of assisting the Director of Mines in exercising regulatory administration and supervision over all reconnaissance, exploration and mining operations. Alusine has over nine years’ experience in mineral rights administration, mineral projects evaluation and mineral sector governance. Before his appointment as Deputy Director of Mines, Alusine served as the Licensing and Technical Assessment Manager for over four years where he developed technical assessment plans and procedures on behalf of the Mines Directorate, carried out technical assessment of over 200 mineral right applications and also provided information and guidance to mining and exploration companies with regards to technical regulations, assessment approaches and plans, including the requirements for preparation of work programs and technical reports.

Prior to joining the NMA in 2013, Alusine worked for five years as a Government Mining Engineer at the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources where he was responsible for the oversight of Mine Wardens, Area Superintendents and Mines Monitoring Officers, Licensing and facilitating technical support to artisanal and small scale miners, collecting, and submitting data associated with all mining activities and monitoring large scale mining operations.

Alusine holds an MBA, PGDip (Mines Management) and B.Eng. (Hons.) degrees from the University of Sierra Leone with further post graduate studies in Mining Engineering and Mining Resource Regulation and Management. Alusine has also undertaken several training courses in Environmental Management applicable to Mining, Mineral Resource Management, Mining Transactions and Agreement and Resource Governance from Jilin University (China), Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia School of Mines (Perth, Australia), University of Dundee (Scotland, UK) and the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford (UK) respectively. Alusine has attended several mining conferences across the globe and has made presentations on the mining investment potentials of Sierra Leone. He is a member of the Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers and the Professional Engineers Registration council.
