ADMINISTER

Administer and enforce the Mines and Minerals Act, 2009, and other Acts and related regulations related to the trade in minerals.

ADVISE

Advise the Minister on policy matters related to mining and natural resource governance, whether or not arising from any law.

FORMULATE

Formulate and implement plans and systems for managing the responsible development of the minerals sector, and to promote the rights of communities.

RECOMMEND

Make recommendations to the Minister for amendments and other improvement in the laws and regulations.

Mission

1.Ā  The object for which the Agency is established is to promote the development of the minerals sector by effectively and efficiently managing the administration and regulation of mineral rights and minerals trading in Sierra Leone, to provide technical and other support to the mineral sector including geographical survey and data collection activities.

2. Without prejudice to the generality of subsection (1), it shall be the function of the Agency to:

  1. administer and enforce the Mines and Minerals Act 2009, and other Acts related to the trade in minerals and related regulations;
  2. make recommendations to the Minister for amendment and other improvements in the laws and regulations specified in paragraph (a) above;
  3. advise the Minister on policy matters related to mining and natural resource governance, whether or not arising from any law referred to in paragraph (a) above;
  4. formulate and implement plans and systems for managing the responsible development of the minerals sector and to promote the rights of communities.

Our Services

Geodata & Information Services

We offer high quality and reliable data and information to help clients within and outside the minerals sector. The following are available from the recently concluded nationwide Airborne Geophysiscal Survey and historic repository:

Library Services

The library holds a huge volume of geological literature, bulletins, memoirs, short papers, maps, print and electronic journals, mining laws and documents to support bibliographical services to internal and external stakeholders.

Mining Cadastre

The Mining Cadastre Office (MCO) is responsible for processing of mineral rights applications; the issuance and administration of licences and permits; the maintenance of cadastral records, registers and maps; etc.

Laboratory Services

The Geological Survey laboratory is responsible for analytical services ranging from sample preparation, petrography, XRF and chemistry, mineralogy, environmental chemistry and sealing of samples for export.
